Amazing Clunking Noise

hey i'm new to the site and have some issues with my monster. I have a 96 cherokee sport on a two inch lift. recently i began hearing a slight clunking noise uder me while driving. thinking it was my u joints i got under and checked. sure enough i had three going out. i replaced all five on my drive shaft yesterday and the noise has not gone away. to test i threw it in four wheel drive and seriously thought my entire drive shaft assembly might fall out. the noise was horrible. it makes it when accelerating, braking and coasting even in neutrel. pretty much if i'm moving it's clunking. any help would be awesome.

emily

92 Wrangler Vibration

Hello, I’m new to JeepForums.org

I have a question on my 1992 Wrangler, 4.0 liter, 5 Speed:

I’ve had a driveline vibration for awhile now. It’s to the point where my drive shaft has come lose at the rear, where the U-joint straps bolt to the pinion yoke.

This has happened twice.

I’ve been told that it could be my transfer case. (my transfer case still engages 4x4 and will move the jeep without issue)

I’ve also been told that my rear differential needs to be rebuilt. This makes sense because the drive shaft comes lose from the rear. There’s just under a quarter inch of back and forth slack when hand turning the pinion yoke.

Any ideals where to go with this. Transfer case? or. Differential?

Thanks for any help

Aaron
Denver

I have been trying to download my I-Tunes library onto my hard disk in the Navigation instrument in my 2008 Wrangler. I have tried to download it directly from my I POD and also copied the files from I TUNES onto a flash drive and tried to download it that way. The download is not successful...either the tunes do not download at all or only downloads a small number of them. I have less than 6 GIGS of songs, so it should hold the data. Anyone else have trouble with this or am I just technically challenged? Signed... no music to my ears...

Best Off Road, Bad Weather, Survival Vehicle?

I am looking for a primary vehicle or a secondary vehicle. I am leaning more towards a truck as a second vehicle b.c it will allow me to get a Dodge Challenger in two years. I dont know where to begin so maybe someone with more experiance could help me organize my options.

I want the vehicle to be safe as the largest problem I see is crashing in bad weather conditions. I would like to be able to walk away from a bad crash. The vehicle has to have a huge fuel tank to give me some sweet distance. A newer vehicle would have to have amazing differentials. Otherwise, an older vehicle would need lockers.

Seems like the new Dodge 2500 power wagon is perfect except the side crash rating on it is terrible.

I want the truck to be very off road capable in mud, trails, deep snow, rain/ flooded areas etc.

I tested an 03 chevy s100 4wd with decent tires and it did not go through anything that I wanted it to. With that said I want something that could go through insanely deep snow, mud, etc.

I will use this vehicle for bad weather driving, weekend fun, hunting, camping and in the event of a diaster such as hurricane Katrina.

Deuce and half- Cheap insurance, fun to drive,

Cons- Slow, big, draws alot of attention. And my GF wont ever ride in one...

M35A3- Would be the one I would go with out of the two b.c it comes the way I want it out of the box.

M35A2 Ugly but is multi fuel and will haul me and all my friends where ever I want.

I rulled the jeep wrangler out b.c I want to move at least 7 people or have room to camp in it. Unless the wrangler does something special that no other vehicle does it has to be rulled out.

Excursion

Would be perfect but gas mileage is like that of a Deuce and half.

F350, F250, or 1995 F150. Expensive and would make me sad if i scratched it.

Jeep Commander 5.7 hemi AWD fully loaded.

2007 Chevy suburban, Escalade ESV, Yukon XL. Most likly would go with the suburban.

Honestly im leaning towards a 1980's chevy suburban with lockers, winch, huge bumper, and 37's. Can take all my friends, drive through anything and is basic enough to fix without tons of computers.

Are there any vehicles I should look into that im not noticing?

Tackling Death Wobble 2004 Tj - Quadratec Parts

Hi Gang

I've done a lot of reading here, and picked up some great tips about Front End Death Wobble. I'm a 62 year old Wrangler owner, and do NOT have any souped-up lift conversions, or anything like that. My Jeep is STOCK with 62K miles. However, even Stock Wranglers can be afflicted by Death Wobble. Three front end wheel balances and rotations have NOT cured the symptom. Therefore, based on what I've read here, and recommended by Quadratec, I ordered the following parts;

http://www.quadratec.com/products/56118_07.htm < Why did I order this particular tie rod? Because the current tie rod shows wear and play. The other part replacements are ALL recommended here and by Quadratec. My only hesitation has always been the quality of 'After-Market' parts.

With the exception of the Skyjacker Steering Damper, in this case, I'm trusting/hoping these other parts will live up to Mopar.

http://www.quadratec.com/products/56013_04D.htm

http://www.quadratec.com/products/16071_99.htm

Does anyone have other ideas or opinions?

Thank You
Mike

Transmission Issues

Hello all, I'm new to this site and to cars. (but definitely not to working on them). I'm 15 and my parents recently gave me their 2005 Jeep Liberty. It's been a pretty good car overall, but it has quite a few issues. For one thing, I had to completely reconstruct the drivers door after my dad demolished the armrest.

Anyway, I should get to business. When accelerating from a stop, the transmission kind of lurches into gear in a very un-smooth way. (It's the automatic trans with a 4x4 system)

Also, when you put your foot down to try to pass somebody on the highway (it seems to have absolutely no power in doing so) it acts like it searches for gears. It will kick from 4th gear to second gear to 4th gear again and then to third for seemingly no reason. We have had the transmission flushed once before at about 48,000 miles. It now has 59,000 miles and just really seems to slip.

When turning right and putting your foot down, there is noticeably no power at all going to the wheels, you can tell the transmission is slipping. It has the correct amount of fluid and everything, proper color and smell. I am just so confused with it and I am hoping that I described it to the point where I can get some help.

Thanks everyone!

Where Did Drive Go?

I have an '06 Commander 4x2(I know, I know! It's what the wife wanted! She said she didn't need a four wheel drive!) and the transmission is stuck in "limp mode". It goes automatically to 3rd gear when you put the selector in drive. I pulled the pan and changed both filters since they were overdue and there was very little metal in it. Only the super-fine, gray, smudgy stuff in the pan of every other automatic tranny I've ever serviced. Fluid was still nice and red and there was just barely a hint of that used but not burnt smell to it. Any ideas where to start? Any chance I can use a code scanner to clear the codes and this thing will shift again? It shifts fine into reverse and it will go into drive if you pull it straight in gear as soon as the vehicle starts. It has first gear when you do this, you can feel it if you take off, it just switches straight back into limp mode after a few seconds. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Automatioc Tanny Problem Or Not?

Howdy All,

I test drove a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 automatic 4.0. with 121000 miles
When I put the Jeep in 4 LO and nail the throttle from a full stop at about 3200 RPM the tranny stops pulling for a moment and the RPM's go up to 4000 and then the tranny graps again and the RPM's drop back to 3300.

My question, is this a transmission problem or is there rev limiter of sorts on this model of Jeep to protect the drive? It only did it in 4 lo.

I'm hopping to get some replys soon.

Thank You.

"99 Cherokee. Wondering if anyone has has similar problems. This usually only happens after it's warmed up. Till the it shifts fine. Once it's warm it doesn't like to shift into drive. You have to play with the throttle to geet it to finally shift. Once you stop it goes back into low and doesn't always not shift into drive. Then once you stop and put it in reverse it stalls. Start it back up and power braking will get you going but not safety.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Replacing My Clutch Slave Cylinder

Alright, so last year my mom decided to take over my Christmas present (1989 YJ) while me and my dad had to try and figure out what the overheating problem was with her car.

So in the meantime, somehow the clutch slave cylinder managed to start leaking (it was sucking up fluid and slowly dripping out of the tranny) and it finally blew out late last year. Haven't had the time or cash to do research on making the swap until now. I have the slave cylinder and now it needs to go in, but we're clueless on where to start.

Anyone have any advice, so I don't wind up messing my car up? Also, about how long should this take? The only thing I know is that I gotta pull the tranny out to get to the slave cylinder, which involves taking out skid plate, transfer case, ect.

A/c Drainage Leaking Onto Passenger Floor

I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sport, 6 cyl. automatic. I love it but have a problem--the condensation from the a/c is for the most part draining onto the floor board of the passenger side. It is creating a huge problem with the carpet, mat and floor itself. Some of the condensation does drain out like it is supposed to, but an awful lot is still ending up inside where it just doesn't belong! Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Hello, I'm wanting to swap out my carbureted 4.2L AMC for a chevy small block. I'm getting either a 305 or 327 (fuel injected) but I can't find a reasonable way to put it in. If I keep my tf999, it's $500 for an adapter (advanced adapters). If i carry over the chevy tranny, I look at about 450-500 for an adapter there, and so on so forth. Is there any way to do this for cheaper? I'm getting the block, ECU and harness for about 600 and I want to spend as little as possible beyond that point. Thanks in advance!!

Broken Window Replacement

Hello, my 97 Grand Cherokee got vandalized and 3 windows were broken, the driver side front power window, the passenger side rear privacy vent window/stationary and the driver side rear stationary cargo window. I was able to replace the 2 door windows fairly easily and all for about $20 by going to a junk yard . . . lots of Cherokees to pilfer from. I did find the rear stationary cargo window but have no idea on how to change. Any pointers, I am sure it is fairly easy but I have no idea on how to remove from another junked vehicle and how to replace. It looks like there is some sort of hardened outer gasket and also like it is some how glued in.
