What year is it?  Does it have electric windows/locks or manual ones?

the 96 and older are pretty simple.  97-02 arent to bad but not quite as easy.

Power accessories make it a royal PITA.  You have to deconnect the wiring harness into the doors and feed it through the body each time you take them on or off.

Basically you cut the lower part of the hinje from the door and shorten the pin so they just lift off when the door is open.
I have done it to my 89 pioneer and it works great.  It has manul everything so I don't have to mess with the wiring.

I have been wanting to take off the doors on my 99 XJ. Everyone I have talked to say DONT! if I wanna keep my power windows and locks... Everyone is saying that once you go to put your doors back on, no matter how you wire it back of (I know ppl that have just spliced the old wires, made disconnects, etc..) and they all say either you will continusally blow fuses, fry wires, or that the windows and lock never seem to have the power they once did... I am not getting this info from amatures. This info came from friends that own and work at a Jeep shop, and club members from a local club. I still want to do it though, LOL Who here has taken their power doors off, what experiances have you had? -Andrew

The 97+ might be different, but on the 84-96 model years if you remove the kick panels you can disconnect the harness to the door right there, no cutting or splicing needed.  Still a PITA though.

Is this just removall every once and a while on a DD or is this rig a trail rig?

Not true Andrew, I'm not an expert on Jeep but not amateur either; I have taken the wiring apart (almost everything; under the dashboard and under the hood) ... The power windows is easy (just one power lead) the power door lock is abit difficult (two power lead, I have the 1995 keyless entry model), but haven't fry no fuse nor wires; in facts, the left rear door lock that used to have problem now works better than ever. Yes, you can wire them better than the factory ... I even put labels on my wires, just in case. Gannet

I am also in Ca, I am in Bako. As far as I know its legal. I know a lot of people that run their XJ's with no doors around town. -Andrew

I think the only requirement in most states is you need side mirrors.  I know some make brakets they can attach and use a CJ style mirror on their XJ.

I only run mine doorless offroad so doesn't really affect me.

Though I did drive around Moab, UT for a week doorless and never got hasled.  Also using hand signals for turning  lol.

I think Ca's law is you have to have the left side view mirror, and a rear view mirror... But XJ's are no different that say a TJ.
