Side Pipes vs. Tail Pipes

Looking for a new exhaust for my '81 CJ-7 with AMC 304. 4WD Hardware has a nice exhaust kit with headers and side pipes. Any thoughts about side vs. tail pipes. Other than quicker evacuation of fumes, I'm not sure it wouldn't be louder or a burn you leg sort of thing. Any thoughts? Gordon

I have both styles between on my cj7 and cj8.

 

I did rip my side pipe off once, and the wifer doesn’t like the side pipes because of the exit challenges she has……

 

Other than that there isn’t really a difference, what ever your preference.

One thing i did notice is fumes inside from side pipes and son burnt his leg twice...I am gonna move my exit back a inch or 2
