A few months a go I had the starter and flex plate replaced. A few weeks after that, the ground wire from the battery to the engine block fried. Replaced that and starter. A few weeks after that, starter wouldn't shut off. Replaced starter and solenoid. Yesterday, starter made low level grinding noise and wouldn't start. Replaced starter and still does same thing. What's left? (other than find new source for starters) -- tm / Houston / 85 Jeep Cherokee, 2 dr. 2.5L, 4x4 "It's useless to put on the brakes when you're upside down." Paul Newman

Check your positive cable and battery terminals.  Also throw a load tester on the battery and see how it does.

I have had mixed results with some parts store rebuilt starters.  Most of the time all the stock ones need are new brushes, but they can be hard to find.

How bout checking the starter relay? Sticky relay perhaps? Agree with Andy, most of the time starter motor just need new carbon brushes; if it's hard to find, you could buy other motors brushes that's a bit bigger and then grind them to fit. That's what I did with mine, Gannet

The problem is that the gears aren't pulled back into the starter fast enough without crunching some flexplate teeth on the way. I'm now trying to find a new or OEM starter. The local Jeep dealership has three rebuilt ones available listed in the country, none in Houston. I don't really want to go full tilt to a Mean Green, but are there any other aftermarket, true reliable starters for under $200? If I had the original one, I would have it rebuilt, but the mechanic has gone through so many rebuilt units, he's just as frustrated as i am. Anyone got access to quality replacement parts?

I was in a hurry and got one at the local carquest.  Has been going good for over 2 years now.
I found some brushes online to rebuild the one that was on there, but have not gotten around to it.

Great, I just jinxed it  lol.
