Hey all:
I just put a knew starter in my 83 CJ7 with a 304 and auto tranny. The last starter was way noisy, and the new one even makes some noise. I know there is no built in adjustment, but I thought maybe one of the list members may have figured out a way to make the noise go away. Also does any one no if the 258 flywheel is the same as the 304. they sure look the same from what I can see through the inspection area. Thanks for any info!

Shims, most starters come with shims, or you auto parts store should have
them. these allow you to position the starter a little farther away from the
flex plate or fly wheel cutting down on noise, try just one first. The ones
I have used are very thin (not even a 1/16 of an inch)
